About Northlight

Nervous Patients

A large proportion of the general population still does not visit a dentist on a regular basis. One of the most common reasons is dental anxiety and phobia, often based on previous bad experiences.

At Northlight Dental we understand that for many people a trip to the dentist is a difficult proposition. One of the first things to recognise is that you are not alone in feeling this way and we sympathise. Dr Sunil Passan has a wealth of experience treating highly anxious and phobic patients, both in a hospital and practice setting.

Anxiety management techniques can make all the difference and sometimes sedation may be the right solution to make you feel at ease and comfortable during your treatment. This can help nervous patients through the first phases of their treatment and allows them to gain confidence. Sedation is also a useful technique for any patient undergoing a procedure, such as a tooth extraction, about which they feel apprehensive.

Is there anything that can help me with my fear of the dentist?

Yes. Some people are so frightened of the dentist that they will not go for dental treatment. They can overcome their fears with relaxation or sedation. Our dentists are sympathetic about these feelings, and you can ask our dentists about these ways to help.

What is sedation?

We offer an intravenous or IV sedation. This is given by injection, either in the back of your hand or in your arm. The dose will depend on the amount of treatment needed and the length of time it will take to complete.

How will IV sedation in the surgery affect me?

You become drowsy and unaware of any treatment, but you are still able to co-operate with the dentist. The effects of sedative medicine take some time to wear off and your dentist will tell you how long the drugs will take to clear from your body. You will need to take certain precautions following sedation, such as not driving or drinking alcohol.

So if you have any form of dental anxiety or even phobia why not give us a call so we can talk you through the ways in which we could help.
