My Invisalign Journey

Hi, I’m Becky and I am the practice manager at Northlight Dental, in Aspley Guise, Bedfordshire. I have just started my invisalign (clear braces) treatment to straighten my teeth and I am going to be sharing my Invisalign journey with you.

Background Story

I had removable braces when I was in my teens and had lovely straight teeth, but I used to suck my thumb, so over my early twenties my teeth started to come forward and gaps started to appear between my teeth especially between the front top teeth. This has made me quite self-conscious about my smile and even though my gaps and protruding teeth are not noticeable by other people they are to me.

I decided I would speak to Neha, our in-house specialist orthodontist, who suggested I book in for a consultation with her, so that she could assess my teeth, my bite and give me all the brace options. After the consultation I decided that I would like to go ahead with Invisalign over the other treatment options, as they are clear and virtually unnoticeable, and I did not want to feel even more self-conscious.

The records Appointment

This appointment involved

  • Photographs being taken on my smile and my teeth.
  • Special moulds taken of my teeth.
  • An x-ray picture

This information along with Neha’s detailed prescription was sent to Invisalign so they could do a simulation of what my teeth will look like afterwards and give an idea of how long the treatment would take. This simulation would be available at my next appointment.

My treatment plan and Clincheck Appointment

This was really exciting!

I got to see what my teeth would look like after the treatment. I have to say I was really impressed. I was told I would need 30 aligners and it would take just over a year.

At this appointment you get to say whether you are happy to proceed with treatment or if you feel changes could be made. I felt that the end result was better than I expected and I approved the treatment.

The next appointment will be fitting my first aligners.

Placement of my attachments

This was a longer appointment then the previous appointments.

This appointment involved small white attachments being put on my teeth. These help with the movement of the teeth and you can hardly see them.

Fitting of my 1stAligner

Once the attachments have been placed, the first set of aligners are fitted

At the end you get a goodie bag with your first few sets of aligners Each set will need to be changed every 14 days at first, and assess at the next appointment, to see whether it can be changed to every 10 days.

I will need to wear the aligners for a minimum of 22 hours per day, only taking them out when I drink hot drinks or eat food.

Also included were retainer boxes for when I need to take them out to eat and a sheet on howto look after them and also some ‘squishies’ which I will need to bite on to ensure that the aligners are seated down well.

Three weeks in!

I am now three weeks into my treatment and I am on my second set of aligners.

The first week was trying to get used to having something covering my teeth. I got a few ulcers as my tongue kept playing with them. I also found it hard to get to sleep for the first few nights. But now not problems at all.

The first few day after having my aligners put in there is mild discomfort as your teeth move but nothing to unbearable.

So far my journey has gone well, and I can already notice a change.

I will update you in a months’ time and let you know how I am getting on.
